From the great blue hole near Belize, to the mythical and mysterious Nazca Lines in Peru, these are the 20 STRANGEST Locations on Earth ! The Catacombs of Paris -- There’s a network of old quarry tunnels underneath the streets of Paris, and it’s thought to constitute the final resting place of some six million Parisians, the majority of whom are anonymous … That’s because during the 18th and 19th centuries, random skulls and bones were extracted from the city’s overcrowded graveyards. Today, the bones are arranged in a more orderly, if creepy fashion. Authorities arranged the bones in their modern macabre manner when the site’s potential as a tourist attraction was recognized. Did you know urban explorers who frequent the catacombs are called cataphiles? Fly Geyser -- This almost looks like a Photoshop effort, so something from a sci-fi movie. But this located on the edge of Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, and was actually created in 1964, when an energy company accidentally drilled into geothermic waters … and today, a scalding fountain shoots up to five feet high. The resultant mineral buildup allows the colorful cone to grow several inches each year. Those amazing colors are said to be due to thermophilic algae. Whale Bone Alley -- Yttygran (et-tie-gran) Island located in frozen Siberia has become a hotspot for tourists. In 1976 archaeologists discovered bowhead whale bones over 600 years old standing in the ground, and running parallel for some 1800 feet along the northern shoreline. The so-called alley consists of carefully arranged whale bones and skulls, stones, and a large number of meat storage pits. It’s thought that indigenous tribes used the site for sporting contests and initiation rituals. Bermuda Triangle -- Also called the Devil’s Triangle, the infamous half-billion square mile area has long been shrouded in mystery and is the source of many myths. There are plenty of stories to excite the imaginations of conspiracy theorists involving planes, ships and people who have vanished here, never to be seen or heard from again. Did you know the US coast guard disputes the existence of any such area? Ruakuri (roo-ah-kurry) Cave -- The images of electric blue light against a dark background can make you think of looking at stars in the night sky. But those scenes are inside a cave … Ruakuri Cave in New Zealand is home to countless glow worms that hang over a pool of water … They create a surreal luminescence that is bright enough to highlight creases in the limestone cave. Only adult females and larvae emit the magical glow … the light attracts male worms for mating and attracts other insects for the larvae to eat. The Wave -- It looks like a picture of the Martian landscape, but this amazing sight is hidden deep in the desert of Arizona. The formation called the Wave is made of sand dunes that over time turned into rock. Thought to be 190 million years old, the horizontal and vertical layers are the result of the sand dunes on top of each other and solidified by deposits of calcium salts. The twisty, otherworldly sights are found somewhere in Arizona’s Vermilion (ver-milly-on) Cliffs Wilderness Area. It’s a beautiful sight, but don’t go searching for it … a special permit is needed to access the spectacular spot. Salar de Uyuni (sailor day eye-ooney), Bolivia -- Is this guy actually walking on water? No … but it sure looks like it! This is one of the flattest regions on the planet. When the salt flats are covered with a thin layer of water during the rainy season, it creates an amazing mirror image optical illusion! This area of Bolivia comprises the largest salt flats in the world, at over 4,000 square miles … and is known to contain at least half of the world’s lithium reserves. The Door To Hell -- In 1971, a site in Derweze (Der-wizz), Turkmenistan was identified by Soviet engineers as a potentially large oil field site. While drilling for oil, they instead hit one of the world’s largest gas reserves. Because of concerns that poisonous gases released from the cavern could travel to nearby towns, the engineers decided to burn the gas off … figuring it would burn itself out within a few weeks. That was over 40 years ago, and the fire is still going strong! Nicknamed “The Door to Hell” the natural gas crater, it has since become a hotspot for tourists! Who on Earth is exposed to the most ionizing radiation? Check out Audible: http://bit.ly/AudibleVe I'm filming a documentary for TV about how Uranium and radioactivity have shaped the modern world. It will be broadcast in mid-2015, details to come. The filming took me to the most radioactive places on Earth (and some places, which surprisingly aren't as radioactive as you'd think). Chernobyl and Fukushima were incredible to see as they present post-apocalyptic landscapes. I also visited nuclear power plants, research reactors, Marie Curie's institute, Einstein's apartment, nuclear medicine areas of hospitals, uranium mines, nuclear bomb sites, and interviewed numerous experts. Notes about measuring radiation: Sieverts are a measure of 'effective dose' - that means they measure the biological impact of the energy transferred to tissues from radiation. Obviously I owe a debt to the fantastic chart made by xkcd, which inspired my visual approach to this video. https://xkcd.com/radiation/ DOSES MAY VARY The level of radiation varies widely around the world depending mainly on altitude and geology (excluding nuclear accidents). Estimates of particular doses also vary. All numbers reported in this video should be taken as order of magnitude only. The most contentious claim may be that smokers receive the highest dose of ionizing radiation. This is not a whole body dose, but a dose to the lungs as specified in the video. Amazing places around the world where you need to travel to. Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg --------------------------------------------------------------- Description: We are all well aware of the Seven Wonders of the World, which vary between man-made spectacles of nature and what Mother Earth has created on her own. Whether you’re a world traveler, or a homebody, do yourself a favor and go out to see these places before you die. You definitely will not regret it. But what exactly should you go out and see and where do you start? For example, in Norway, there is a place called Trolltunga, and it was created over 10,000 years ago and is a rather popular destination for hikers and bikers. If you’re afraid of heights, then you might want to avoid this place, as there is nothing stopping you from falling into the foggy abyss as it is 1,100 meters above sea level and 700 meters above the lake it towers over. Interestingly enough, Trolltunga has seen no fatalities so far. In Australia, there is a pink body of water called Lake Hillier that spans 600 meters long and 250 meters side. The lake is a saline lake, and is rather popular amongst tourists and locals alike. The pink color has remained a mystery for a while, and the water stays pink even if you take some out of it. It is speculated that it is algae that makes the water turn its pink color. But if you need something a little cooler, then head on over to Alaska to the Mendenhall Ice Caves and are located under the 12 mile long Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau, Alaska. But you might want to make a rush visit since global warming has already caused part of the cave to collapse. Not to mention that you also have to kayak and ice climb to also reach the ice caves. In Mexico, there is the Cenotes de Yucatan, where there are over 7,000 sinkholes thanks to the collapse of the landscape’s limestone. The waters in the Yucatan Peninsula are crystal clear, making the location extremely popular amongst scuba divers. The area has vast caves and secret passageways and caves…all under water. In Turkey, there is the Palmukkale, which is a natural spot in the country made up of 17 hot springs and travertine ranging from 35 to 100 degrees Celsius. People love to visit Palmukkale because they can bathe in the hot springs, which has been a practice for thousands of years. Fly Geyser looks like it was taken out of a painting, but it was really created by accident from a drilling incident in 1964. Minerals upon minerals piled on top of the site, creating a colorful geyser that is a popular tourist destination in Nevada. But be careful, you can only access it from a private road. In Belize, there is a place called the Great Blue Hole, which Jacques Cousteau declared it as one of the best scuba diving site being 300 meters long and 124 meters deep. These are just a few of the amazing surreal sites that you have to see before you die. So, take a look at the video and be prepared to be amazed. --------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheRichest.org Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheRichest_Com Instagram: http://instagram.com/therichest --------------------------------------------------------------- Featuring: Everyone knows about the Seven Wonders of the World, but what about some of the lesser known and more treacherous locations to visit?
